Water is the one thing almost every guest at your restaurant or hotel consumes, usually without a second thought. That's exactly why it deserves more scrutiny than it usually gets — including from the business serving it. If you're sourcing custom-labelled water bottles for your tables, checking your supplier's FSSAI certification isn't paperwork for its own sake; it's the baseline check that protects your guests and your brand.

What FSSAI Certification Actually Means

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the government body that regulates food and beverage safety in India. Any business that manufactures, packages, or sells packaged drinking water needs a valid FSSAI license under the specific category for packaged drinking water — not a generic food license that happens to cover "beverages" in passing.

A genuine license comes with a unique registration number, a defined category (manufacturer, importer, etc.), and an issue and expiry date. Any supplier who can't produce that on request isn't operating within the rules, regardless of what their bottle labels claim.

Why It Matters More for Water Than Almost Any Other Product

Water bottled for direct consumption skips the safety net most other food products get — there's no cooking step, no further processing, nothing between the bottle and your guest's mouth. If something's wrong with the water, your guest experiences it immediately, and they associate that experience with your restaurant, not with your bottle supplier.

That's the part easy to overlook: your supplier's compliance failure becomes your reputation problem. Guests don't see your supply chain — they see your logo on the bottle.

What to Check Before You Sign With a Bottle Supplier

  • A valid FSSAI license number — not just a claim of "certified," an actual number you can ask to see.
  • The right license category — specifically covering packaged drinking water, not a general food business registration.
  • Recent lab test records — testing against a recognized standard such as IS 14543, ideally from an accredited lab, not an in-house claim.
  • Willingness to actually show you the documents — a supplier confident in their compliance will hand over certificates without hesitation.

How Elma Handles This

Elma holds a State FSSAI License for packaged drinking water manufacturing, and every batch we produce is tested by Hexiqon Laboratory, an ISO 17025:2017-accredited testing lab, against IS 14543:2024 — the Indian standard for packaged drinking water. You can view our current license and read more about our testing programme on our Certifications page.

If you're currently using a supplier who can't show you the same, it's worth asking why.
