Choosing a water bottle design isn't really one decision — it's a handful of smaller ones that add up to how the bottle looks and performs on your tables. Here's the order we'd work through them in.
1. Start With Bottle Size, Not Label Art
Before touching design, decide what sizes you actually need: 500ml for individual table service is the most common choice for restaurants, 750ml–1L for hotel rooms or events, and sometimes both. Getting the size right first means the label gets designed for its real proportions instead of being resized awkwardly later.
2. Decide What the Label Needs to Communicate
At minimum: your brand name and logo. Beyond that, decide deliberately — do you want a tagline? A QR code to your menu or socials? Required regulatory information (which a compliant supplier will guide you on)? Listing everything the label needs to carry before designing prevents a cluttered redesign later.
3. Pick a Finish That Matches Your Positioning
Glossy labels read as bright and standard; matte or textured finishes tend to read as more premium. Neither is objectively "better" — the right choice depends on whether your restaurant's overall positioning is casual and vibrant or upscale and understated.
4. Use Your Actual Brand Colors — Not Close Approximations
A label printed in an approximate shade of your brand color looks off in a way most guests can't name but will notice. Share your exact brand color codes with your supplier rather than describing the color verbally.
5. Design for Reorders, Not Just the First Batch
Ask whether your supplier keeps your approved design on file for reprints, and whether they offer design support if you need to tweak it later (new offer, updated contact info, seasonal variant). A design process that only accounts for the first order creates friction on every order after that.
6. Sanity-Check Against Current Trends — Then Ignore the Ones That Don't Fit
It's worth knowing what's working elsewhere — see our post on water bottle design trends for 2026 — but the right design is the one that fits your specific brand and guests, not the one that's simply trending.
